Mortality = lower socioeconomic groups
Higher in north

What is candidacy?
Ways in which people’s eligibility for medical attention and intervention is negotiated between individuals and services
What is help-seeking
People come to identify and seek to present themselves as having needs to which health services can respond
How to identify candidacy
People in deprived areas show readiness to consult but more likely to manage health as series of major and minor crises - probably linked to normalisation of health problems and judging of health problems
Self-management
Individuals ability to manage symptoms, treatment, physical and psychosocial consequences and lifestyle changes with a chronic condition
Habitus
Connection between class culture and lifestyles, shaped by living conditions and engenders practices adapted to these conditions
Reasons for low uptakes of health checks
- Low uptake because:
- Lack of awareness/knowledge
- Misunderstanding of purpose
- Aversion to preventive medicine
- Time constraints
- Difficulties getting to GP
- Doubts as pharmacies being appropriate settings
