Living things in their environment Flashcards
Habitats
—> Earth has regions with
different climates.
—> Within each region there are
many habitats where different
plants and animals live.
—> Organisms have adaptations
which help them to survive in
their habitats.
Food chains
—> A food chain shows how
energy is passed from one
organism to another
—> Food chains begin with
producers which make their
own food.
—> Animals get their energy
from producers so they are
consumers.
Feeding ourselves
—> Humans destroy habitats
when they clear land to
grow crops
—> If farm chemicals aren’t used
properly they damage natural
food chains.
—> Invasive plants and animals
can destroy existing food
chains.
—> We can reduce damage to
other food chains by
producing more food in less
space and reducing our use of
chemicals.
Changing the planet
—> A layer of ozone in the
atmosphere blocks ultraviolet
radiation from reaching Earth.
—> CFCs used in the past have
destroyed ozone, and put
plant and animal life at risk.
—> Carbon dioxide keeps Earth
warm and allows plants
to grow.
—> Burning fossil fuels and
cutting down forests increases
the carbon dioxide in the
the atmosphere and cause
global warming
—> Burning fuels also produce
acid rain, which damages
plants, aquatic life, and
buildings.
Preventing extinction
—> We can save plants and
animals from extinction by
reducing pollution, setting up
wildlife sanctuaries, saving
habitats, removing predators,
and using captive breeding
programs.
Obtaining energy
—> Fossil fuels are nonrenewable
energy sources. They cannot
be replaced and will
eventually run out
—> Renewable sources will not
run out because they are
constantly replaced. They
include sunlight, biofuels,
wind, water, and geothermal
energy
Growing fuels
—> To help the environment,
biofuels should release less
carbon dioxide than petrol
or diesel.
—> Making biofuels can do
unintended damage to the
environment
—> Newer biofuels should do less
damage to the environment.
