the 39 articles state that the sacraments are important as signs of Gods grace and evidence of being a christian
different views of the sacraments
most protestant churches recognise two sacraments - baptism and eucharist
some non-conformist churches recognise two sacraments: some recognise none
Catholics recognise seven sacraments- baptism, confirmation, penance and reconciliation, eucharist, ordination, marriage, and anointing of the sick
infant baptism
the baby is baptised in the belief that it will cleanse the child from original sin
parents godparents make promises on behalf of the child
a sign of the cross is made on the baby’s forehead and water is poured on their head from the front in the church
a lighted candle is given to represent the light of Jesus
adult/believer baptism
some non-conformist churches prefer adult baptism as they feel only an adult can fully make the choice of belonging to the church
each candidate is asked questions about their faith and makes a personal testimony about why they wish to become a Christian
they are baptized through full immersion
the eucharist and its meaning
the eucharist is the re-enactment of the last supper that Jesus shared with his disciples
the bread represents the body of Jesus and the wine his blood
Catholics believe in transubstantiation- that the bread and the wine become the body and blood of Jesus
protestants accept the bread and wine as symbolic of the body and blood of Jesus
purpose of prayer
to get closer to God and communicate with him
to praise God or thank him for what he has done
to ask for Gods help
to say sorry to god when a person feels they have done something wrong
types of prayer
set prayers- some Christians have a prayer book that is used in their Sunday services of worship. many prayers reflect key Christian beliefs, which may praise or thank God for what he has done and provided
the lord’s prayer- this is the most famous prayer, which it is believed Jesus taught to his followers. it contains many of the key Christian beliefs about God
informal prayer- this is when people pray by themselves privately. it can include praying silently or aloud. sometimes Christians use the bible to help them understand the prayer they are offering to God
importance of different types of wroship
Christians feel different types of prayers and forms of worship suit different occasions
having different forms of worship reflects the many different denominations within Christianity and shows the various words and actions they use as part of their communication with God
Christmas
Christmas celebrates the incarnation and birth of Jesus
cards and presents are given, houses are decorated and special church services such as midnight mass are held. carols are sung and nativity plays are put on. families come together to share a special meal and Christians attend a special Christmas day service
many Christians express the meaning of Christmas by helping others and sharing with them
the festival of advent marks the beginning of the year and the countdown to christmans. it takes place four Sundays before Christmas and is a period of preparation. advent calendars and candles are used to count down days
Easter
Easter is the festival that remembers the crucifixion and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus good Friday is when Jesus was crucified and then on Easter Sunday the sadness at the death of Jesus is forgotten and his resurrection is celebrated
special services are hld. there may be re-enactments of the crucifixion on Good Friday, and hot cross buns may be eaten to remind people of Jesus’s death on the cross. cards and presents may be given on Easter Sunday, along with waster eggs to represent the empty tomb of Jesus after the resurrection
importance of the worldwide church
gives global identity to Christians
promotes unity
provides support when needed to Christians. other religious beliefs and non-religious individuals
shows how Christians teachings can be put into action globally
reconciliation and facing persecution
Christians sometimes face persecution, including verbal and physical abuse. they can be presented from practicing their faith or being made to feel isolated
Christians believe they should work to overcome persecution and break down barriers
some Christians support those being persecuted, for example by educating people about Christianity
the worldwide church emphasizes the shared nature of faith to unite all Christians
Christian teachings about charity
Christianity teaches compassion and treating other people fairly ‘love your neighbor as your self’
Jesus taught about helping others
Christians believe God made all humans in his image, so all people should have equality and dignity
Christians believe they will be accountable to God for their actions in this life

some Christians will tithe, to charity each month. others believe a person should give what they can afford and that Christian teachings about charity teach the importance of piety and helping others in any way possible
