Living Organisms- The Skeleton Flashcards
1
Q
How many bones is the skeleton made up of (typically in adults)?
A
206
2
Q
What are the functions of the skeleton?
A
Movement
Support
Protection
Blood cell production
3
Q
State a way the skeleton provides support
A
Without a spine we wouldn’t be able to stay upright.
4
Q
State a way we are protected by our skeletons.
A
The skull protects the brain
We have a rib cage to protect our heart and lungs
The spine also protects the spinal cord.
5
Q
State a way our skeletons provide movement.
A
Some bones (like the skull) are joined rigidly together (they can’t move against each other). Others are joined by flexible joints. Muscles are needed to move bones attached to joints.
6
Q
Blood cell production
A
Red blood cells (carry oxygen) and white blood cells (involved in destroying harmful microorganisms) are made in marrow (soft tissue in larger bones which is protected by the harder part of the bone).
