Living Organisms Flashcards
The 8 characteristics of living organisms.
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Homeostasis, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
Movement
All living cells move
Respiration
The chemical process in which glucose is broken down inside cells.
Sensitivity
The detection and response to stimuli in the surroundings.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment.
Growth
A permanent increase in size and mass.
Reproduction
Production of new organisms.
Excretion
Removal of waste substances.
Nutrition
The taking in of substances for use in the body.
Name the two types of living organisms.
Eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Cells that contain a nucleus:
Eukaryotes
Cells that do not contain a nucleus or organelles:
Prokaryotes
Describe a cell wall.
A layer of cellulose that surrounds a cell and gives it shape and support.
Vacuole:
A large oval structure containing cell sap found in plant cells.
Chloroplasts:
An organelle found in plant cells where photosynthesis takes place.
