Living Conditions Flashcards
When was the Industrial Revolution?
1750 - 1850
What were the horrible conditions workers experienced?
12-16 hour shifts
Low wages that barely covered the cost of living
Dangerous and dirty conditions
Workplaces with little or no worker rights
Living Conditions categorised by:
Overcrowding Poor sanitation Spread of diseases Pollution Low wages
What did the Enclosure Movement do?
The movement forced families and farmers to move to more populated places to work.
In 1750 how many people lived on farms?
In 1850 how many people lived on farms?
- 80%
2. 50%
Why did large families live in small rooms?
Increased population and poverty
What was a common feature in industrial towns and cities?
Inexpensive poorly built rows of houses made for working-class people
Homes didn’t have basic features like:
Running water and ventilation or sanitation
Why were there lots of diseases?
So many people couldn’t properly bathe and had poor hygiene. Lack of sanitation lead to the spread of diseases
What happened when people dropped their waste into the streets?
This made streets very dirty places to live and made it easy for diseases to spread from one to another
Its were formed to accommodate building waste and property owners sometimes would pay to remove the filth
But lots of the filth was deposited in the local rivers, making them very polluted
What was always heavily polluted?
Streets and waterways, air
What is the tie between coal and air pollution?
○ Factories made lots of air pollution from the burning of coal
○ Coal was the most used fuel in the industrial revolution
○ But coal is a heavy air pollutant because when its burned, it sends small particles into the air
§ Because of that, lots of factories caused the air quality to be very bad and gave industrial cities and towns a characteristic ‘smog’ that seemed to hover above them
Why was life hard for working-class people?
- Often forced to live in cramped conditions that didn’t have running water or sanitation
- Led to the easy spread of diseases and worsened the already very bad pollution
- People had very little ability to stop that as they were already paid very little and struggled to afford their current lifestyles
