DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHILD AND ADULT WORKERS Flashcards
child workers:
- Children were often working dangerously close to spinning belts and shafts that powered machines
- children generally made considerably less money than adults did for doing the same work. Estimates show that children were paid 10-20% of what an adult would be paid
- children were more obedient in completing work and accepting punishment than adults were
- children were hired in the Industrial Revolution because they were naturally smaller and could fit into tighter spaces. This was very helpful in the new mechanised factories in the late 18th century.
factory workers:
Factory workers, especially children, were often required to work on machines that were not safe to operate.
Factory workers also had to endure the heat produced by numerous machines.
The nature of the work being done meant that the workplace had to be very hot
mining workers:
Common job miners, especially children, had to do involved them being connected to a coal cart by a strap so they could put the cart of coal behind them in a tunnel.
Mine shafts were constantly prone to collapse
Miners sometimes came into contact with dangerous gases that existed naturally underground.
influence of technological innovations on the industrial revolution
Played an important role in the revolution
They changed the way thing were powered, how goods were manufactured, and how people communicated and the way goods were transported.
impact on women
much of the work that women performed in the “domestic sphere” remained the same across the 19th century—cooking, cleaning, caring for children
lower wages than men and often times started working as children
sometimes they might have worked the entire day and night to keep up their daily routine
