Liver structure and histology Flashcards
What is the liver made of?
2 lobes separated by a ligament with little internal structure of connective tissue
What is the blood flow within the liver?
2 ways in and 1 out - hepatic vein, hepatic artery and hepatic portal vein
What is the hepatic vein?
It provides a constant concentration of products in circulation e.g. monomers
What is the hepatic artery?
blood from the lungs with oxygen
What is the hepatic portal vein?
From digestive tract with food biomolecules and variable concentration of digestive products
What is the functional unit of the liver?
A lobule
How many lobes are in the liver?
10000
What i he structure of lobules?
1-2mm and contain a central vein and all combine to form hepatic vein draining liver
What are sinusoids?
Blood channels that seperate hepatocytes
How does blood enter lobules?
From the portal triad
What does the portal triad contain?
branches of the hepatic artery and hepatic portal vein
How are the 2 blood supplies mixed?
Oxygenated and nutrient filled blood mixed in sinusoids
How is blood contents regulated?
By hepatocytes
How is regulated blood drained?
by the central vein
How is bile secreted?
Into bile canaliculi
What is the flow of bile?
Opposite direction to blood
What are Kupffer cells?
They line the liver’s vascular system or sinusoids
What is the purpose of of Kupffer cells?
Play a role in blood formation in embryo and destruction of cellular debris by ingesting microbes and degrading old red blood cells
What is histology of the liver?
Central vein has no connective tissue, sinusoids are channels radiating towards CV, lobes look roughly hexagonal and portal triad has connective tissue
