Liver, Spleen And Blood Cells Flashcards
Role of the liver in the life cycle of RBC
Produces RBC during foetal life (haemopoiesis)
Kuoffer cells break down damaged and worn out blood cells
Uses broken down heme to form bile
Where is the liver located?
Right upper quadrant of abdomen, under cover of ribs and diaphragm
Falciform ligament of liver
Attaches liver to anterior abdominal wall
What is the function of the gallbladder?
To store and concentrate bile
Vessel running up posterior aspect of liver
Inferior vena cava
Which structures enter and leave through the porta hepatis?
Hepatic arteries, portal vein and hepatic ducts
What role does the spleen play in the lifecycle of RBC?
Produces RBC during foetal life (haemopoiesis)
Macrophages remove damages and worn out blood cells
Where is the spleen located?
Left upper quadrant of the abdomen, posterior to stomach, under cover of lower ribs and diaphragm
Where are the splenic notches?
Anterior aspect of superior border
What vessels enter and leave the spleen at the hilum?
Splenic artery, splenic vein
What impression does the stomach leave on the spleen?
Gastric impression
What are erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
What is the shape and size of erythrocytes?
Biconvave discs, 6-7um
What is the function of platelets?
Form platelet plugs to occlude sites of vascular damage
Provide a surface for accumulation of coagulation proteins complexes
Secrete factors involved in vascular repair
What granules do neutrophils have?
Purple granules, granulocyte
What is the size of a neutrophil?
12-14um
How is the nucleus of a neutrophil described?
Multilobed
What proportion of the differential count does the neutrophil account for?
40-75%
What is the function of the neutrophil?
Phagocytic, involved in acute inflammatory response
What type of granules does a basophil have?
Deep blue, granulocyte
What size is the basophil?
14-16um
What is the nucleus of a basophil like?
Bilobed, obscured by granules
What proportion of differential count does the basophil account for?
Less than 1%
What is the function of the basophil?
Releases histamine and heparin, involved in immune response
Is a lymphocyte a granulocyte or agranulocyte?
Agranulocyte
What size is a lymphocyte ?
6-9um
What is the nucleus of a lymphocyte like?
Large and round, almost fills the cell
What proportion of the differential count do lymphocytes account for?
25%
What is the function of lymphocytes?
Immune response
Are monocytes granulocytes or agranulocytes
Agranulocytes
What is the size of a monocyte?
Up to 20um
What is the nucleus of a monocyte like?
Indented
What proportion of differential count does monocyte account for?
2-10%
What is the function of monocyte
Phagocytic
Are eosinophils granulocytes or agranulocytes?
Granulocytes - large, red granules
What is the size of an eosinophil?
12-17um
How is the nucleus of an eosinophil described?
Bilobed
What proportion of differential count do eosinophils account for?
1-6%
What is the function of eosinophils?
Defence against parasites, involved in allergic reactions
