Causes - emotional problems, pathogenic attack
Abdominal distention and pain, migrating pain, lumps/masses along channel
Hypochondriac pain, discomfort in chest, sighing, sensation of plum seed qi in throat
Emotional depression/moodiness, frustration, anger, irritability
Anorexia, nausea, belching, poor digestion (spleen)
Sour regurg, vomiting (stomach)
Epigastric pain/distention, borborygmus, loose stools (spleen/stomach)
Jaundice, bitter taste in mouth
PMS: distention of breasts/lower abdomen, irregular menses, amenorrhea, infertility
Normal or light purple tongue
Wiry pulse
Liver Qi stagnation
Causes - long standing emotional problems like anger/frustrations, excessive consumption of alcohol, fried foods, meats
Headache (severe) behind eyes or vertex of head
Red complexion in the eyes
Nightmares
Sudden tinnitus, deafness, internal ear pain w/purulent discharge
Hematemesis, epistaxis
Dry mouth, bitter taste in mouth
Irritability, anger, insomnia
Hypochondriac pain, constipation, scant yellow urine
Red w/yellow coat
Wiry, rapid, full pulse
Liver Fire Rising
Causes - poor nutrition (low protein), hemorrhage, prolonged liver qi stagnation, chronic disease, kd def (of Qi, essence, yin)
Sallow complexion, pale brittle nails
Insomnia, excessive dreaming
Dryness of eyes, floated, blurred vision, night blindness
Dizziness, tinnitus
Weakness of limbs, numbness in mm, rigidity/stiffness in joints
Scanty menstrual flow, amenorrhea
Small, pale w/ white coat
Wiry, weak, thready
Liver Blood Deficiency
Causes - emotional problems, liver qi stagnation, liver blood deficiency, febrile disorders which injure yin
Dizziness, tinnitus, dryness of eyes, flushed face, hypochondria pain AT NIGHT + heat signs (5 centres, afternoon fever, night sweats, dry throat/mouth, dry skin)
Dry, red tongue
Wiry, thready, rapid pulse
Liver Yin Deficiency
Causes - water not nourishing wood, liver & kd yin deficiency, anger and anxiety
Vertigo, tinnitus, headache (vertex - not as severe)
Distention and pain in eyes
Flushed complexion and red eyes (not as red)
Soreness/weakness in low back/knees
Irritability, anger, palpitations, insomnia, excessive dreams, poor memory
Red, red w/ no coat
Wiry and strong or thready/rapid
Liver Yang Rising (progression of yin deficiency)
Causes - spleen Qi deficiency, excessive consumption of greasy/sweet food, alcoholic drinking, LT liver qi stagnation
Fullness/distention in chest and hypochondrium, loss of appetite, N&V, bitter taste in mouth, stickiness in mouth, heaviness in body
Some diarrhea/constipation, irregular bowel movements (IBD. IBS), thirst w/ no desire to drink, loose stools w/ offensive odor & sticky
Lassitude, jaundice, pain/redness/swelling of scrotum, vaginal discharge/itching, scanty yellow urine, fever
Red body, yellow sticky coat
Wiry, rapid, slippery pulse
Damp Heat in liver and GB
Causes - exogenous pathogenic cold, liver Qi stagnation
Lower abdominal cramping, fullness/distention in hypogastrium
Pain/distention in testes/scrotum, straining of testes, contraction of scrotum, contraction of labia in women, pain alleviated by warmth
Pale, thick white coat
Wiry, strong, tight pulse
Stagnation of Cold in Liver
Causes - emotions - anger, frustration, irritability
Similar to GERD:
Hypochondriac and/or epigastric discomfort
Empty sensation in epigastrium area
N&V, belching, irritability, sighing, breast distention in women
No changes or light violet centre in tongue
Wiry pulse
Rebellious liver Qi
liver Qi stagnation + stomach Qi rebelling
Causes - Qi stagnation, cold, (or heat)
Hypochondria discomfort, abdominal pain
Hematemesis epistaxis, dysmenorrhea, irregular menses, dark/clotted flow
Fibroids, endometriosis
Purple nails, lips, complexion, petechiae
Purple, especially on sides
Wiry and/or CHOPPY
Liver blood stasis
Causes - exogenous heat or wind entering the blood level
High temp, convulsions, neck rigidity, limb tremors, opisthotonus, coma
Deep red with thick yellow coat
Rapid, strong, wiry
Wind Agitating Within: Extreme Heat
Causes - liver yin def, liver yang rising
Sudden unconsciousness, deviation of eyes/mouth, hemiplegia, aphasia or difficult speech, dizziness, convulsions
Peeled red and deviated tongue
Floating, weak OR wiry, rapid pulse
Wind Agitating within: Liver Yang Rising
Causes - external dampness, diet (excess fried/greasy foods, fatty foods, dairy)
Hypochondriac pain, jaundice, N&V, fullness & distention, Fat maldigestion, dull- yellow sclera and skin (vs bright yellow), heaviness sensation, sticky taste in mouth
Thick, sticky coat either unilateral on sides or bilateral
Wiry, slippery pulse
Dampness in GB
Dizziness, blurred vision, floaters, nervousness, timidity, easily startled, lack of courage, lack of initiative, indecisiveness, sighing, restless sleep, waking early in morning
Pale or normal tongue
Weak pulse
GB deficient
