What is meant by cholestasis
Impaired bile formation or flow - causes fatigue, pruitus (itching), dark urine, pale or jaundice
How can cholestasis be relieved
Can be relieved by cholestyramine, ursodeoxycholic acid, rifampicin
How do you manage cholestasis in pregnancy
Intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy
During late pregnancy- adverse fetal outcomes
Treatment of pruitus associated - ursodeoxycholic acid
What is meant by gallstones
Hard minerals or fatty deposits forming stones in the gallbladder bile duct
What are the different types of gall stones
Majority of patients : asymptomatic
Irritated/ blocked gallbladder = pain, infection and inflammation
- if left untreated = complications (biliary colic, cholecystitis, cholangitis, pancreatitis)
If symptoms develop - surgically removed
What is the drug treatment for gall stones
Mild- moderate pain: paracetamol or NSAID
Severe pain: IM diclofenac
