Desegregation laws came into effect at central high school in Little Rock Arkansas
What did Central High decide to do
Admit 9 black students in September
Evening of September 2nd, before new term and 3rd
Governor of Arkansas said on TV that keeping law and order would be impossible if nine black students turned up to school
Opposed integration
3rd September
Sent state soldiers to block entrances of the school so the 9 couldn’t get in, angry mob of white ppl also gathered near the entrance to shout offensive things at the students as they arrived
Elizabeth eckford arrived alone
Three weeks later
President Eisenhower sent 10000 troops to ensure the 9 could get into school
Also ordered the governor to remove his state troops
Heavily armed troops required for next few weeks to keep crowds and soldiers at bay
The year at school
Suffered racial abuse during time at school
Minnie was expelled after she threw chilli con carne onto the head of one of the bullies
Other eight graduated successfully
Consequences
School went private so it wouldn’t have to take black students in the future
The fact that a school in the south had integrated paved the way for integration in the future and proved that black and white people werent that different at all
Attracted worldwide attention to the civil rights movement
