symbolism
something that is itself and also stands for something else
ex: season of winter = death

alliteration
the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words
ex:
the Captain Couldn’t Keep the men in the Cabin
tone
a literary device that reflects the writers attitude toward the subject matter
ex: angry, straightforward, calm
mood
the emotional response that the writer wishes to evoke in the reader through the story
ex: amused, awe, anxious
hyperbole
exaggeration used to heighten effect or for humor
ex: “i’m so hungry i could eat a horse”
litotes
stating something positive by using a negative,
ex: “it’s not bad” (it’s good)
metonymy
something is referred to by the names of things or concepts related to it
ex:
the crown (refers to king or queen)
wheels (signifies a vehicle)
rhetorical question
a question not asked in order to receive an answer from the audience (just to make a point)
ex:
“sure why not?”
“are you crazy?”
apostrophe
speaker talks directly to someone who isn’t there, or to an object or idea as if it can hear
ex: “o death, where is thy sting?”
rhyme scheme
pattern of rhyming words at the end of lines in a poem
ex; ABCB
