Fixed verse
set rules regarding line length, rhyme scheme and meter
Free verse
doesn’t follow structure and sounds normal
End stop
a line that ends with a grammatical boundary or punctuation
Enjambment
the running over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next without punctuation
Ex:

Epithet
adjective or phrase that is used to express a characteristic of a person or thing
Ex: Ivan the terrible, john the savage, etc
oxymoron
Combines two opposite words
Ex: bittersweet, jumbo shrimp
Anachronism
Something that belongs to a different time period than the one its in
Ex: a phone in the 1200s
Euphemism
A polite way of saying something unpleasant or harsh
Ex: “passed away” instead of “died”
Elegy
Expresses sorrow for someone who died
Ode
celebrates something
Couplet
