Requirements for initiating a lithium fluoride dosimetry program
Requested through Naval Dosimetry Center (NDC) via command letter head.
Forces afloat associated with NNPP shall submit their request via the cognizant nuclear- capable shipyard/facility and their immediate chain of command
Letter to NDC to initiate lithium fluoride dosimetry program
a. Numbers of individuals and/or areas to be monitored
b. sources(s) and type(s) of radiation to be monitored
c. Activity’s Unit Identification Number (UIC)
d. Desired start date for dosimetry services
e. Complete mailing address
f. Point of contact with email address and phone number
requirements to permanently terminate an existing Personnel Dosimetry Program
Submit letter to NDC stating

projected termination date
Requirements during change of homeport/shore processing facility
Request to change shore processing facility shall be sent to the proposed shore processor and the current processor
The request shall be sent via TYCOM, and a copy of the request shall be sent to the NDC. The request will include the proposed date of accomplishment and justification

list the contents of the LiF TLD package

Procedures for receipt of LiF TLD’s
Verify TLD’s received match the shipping list
inspect TLD for damage
(document all discrepancies on NAVMED 6470/3)
Check expiration date
Keep different LiF TLD batches separated
Procedures for issue of LiF TLD/s
New issue period within 14 days of receiving the new batch of TLD’s. (Must start before expiration date)
Upload the LiF TLD file (6470/3) into the exposure database via the disk provided with TLD batch
Loads TLD into card holders and assign ready for issue TLD’s to personnel (include posted TLDs)
Assign control TLD (at least two)
Issued LiF TLDs will properly documented on NAVMED 6470/3 (appendix a-13, P-5055)

Procedure for collection of TLD’s
Plan collection strategy, allowing plenty of lead time.
a. Collect all personnel and posted area TLD’s
b. Open and observe TLD orientation of TLD placement within the card holder
c. Remove TLDs from the card holder

e. Inspect for damage
f. Document on the remarks section of the NAVMED 6470/3 via approved computer program

Marking TLD’s
Do write on TLD.
Labels are permitted on TLD card holder (not the TLD) to identify issue period (date) name of the individual, and work center. Do not cover the mylar window.

Collection of TLD’s
Collect all personnel and posted area LiF TLDs
Open and Observe orientation of TLD placement within the holder
Remove LiF TLD from holder
Handle LiF with clean hands
Inspect LiF TLD and holders damage

Preparation for shipment of LiF TLDs
Pack TLDs in original shipping container
assign control TLD for each shipping container
Include the following inside the TLD box
(LiF TLD)
(Printed list of TLD serial numbers(original TLD lift)
(Printed copy of the NAVMED 6470/3)
Disk with TLD file for upload by the processor
Send via certified mail (if shipped)
Submit within 5 working days of end of issue period (hand deliver or mail)
TLD issue periods
TLD issue period shall normally not exceed 13 weeks length
Underway periods less than 12 weeks, ships should coordinate with shore processor to ensure the TLD issue period will not exceed 13 weeks
TLD must be issued no more than 14 days prior to underway and collected no more than 14 days upon return of underway
For SSBNs the TLD issue period will be the duration of the on-crew cycle
If shore processor is unable to provide TLDs in time to support the ships schedule, document this in the Monthly Radiation Health Program Assessment and inform the cognizant ISIC or TYCOM.
Following exceptions:
Max issue period of 35 days
Declared pregnancy workers
Minors who are likely to receive more than 50mrem/month
Radiation workers who are expected to receive greater than 500mrem/year
(these TLD’s may be sent separately from the rest of the batch to allow processing)
Requirements for extending an issue period
Must notify facility, TYCOM, and NDC, and BUMED if LiF TLD are not available via message or official correspondence
Must receive authorization if extending issue period
