3 Purposes of literature
EXPRESSIVE PURPOSE
-authors want to express themselves
AFFECTIVE PURPOSE
-something that evokes feelings (anger, happiness…)
IMITATIVE PURPOSE
-imitation of something (e.g. daily life), author interprets their world
Reading competency
The level of understanding someone has achieved in regards to written text.
Literacy
-Ability to read and write (literate person - who can read and write)
-Knowledge of particular subject (computer literacy, financial literacy…)
Reading literacy
Ability to comprehend a written text
Reading in mother tongue
-broadens word stock, knowledge, increases memory, develops writing skills
Characteristics of a literary text
-Original piece of work. created independently
-Written
-Not aimed at a specific audience (everyone can read and try to understand)
-Fiction
e.g. -> novel, short story, drama, song…

-Aesthetic value
-Polysemic (many meanings of a word)
-Ambiguous (*nejednoznačný)
-Connotative character (Subjective pov of the author)
-Rhetorical devices

Designed for a specific audience
e.g. ->lectures, news, essays, legal documents, articles…
Functions of a non-literary text
-Informative
-Objective
-Denotative language (literal meaning of a word)
-Doesn’t use rhetorical devices
-Transmits knowledge
