-prophecy
-“fair is foul and foul is fair” : good is bad and bad is good (appearance is different from reality)

A

They tell them the prophecy,:
-Macbeth will be the thane of cowder
-Macbeth will be the king of Scotland
-banquo’s sons will be the kings but he wont

25
Scene4: lady Macbeth reads Macbeth’s letter, how does she respond?
-she makes a plan to kill king Duncan - she fears Macbeth is too kind to kill king Duncan
26
Scene 6 and 7 what happens?
-king Duncan arrives - Macbeth struggles to choose whether to kill king Duncan or not, but decides to not kill him (regicide=murder of a king) - lady Macbeth tries to convince him with her plan: drug soldiers and put the blood of king Duncan on them
27
Soliloquy means..?
When a character thinks out loud for the audience/readers to understand
28
Scene 1: murder of the king , how does it happen?
Macbeth hears a bell ring, a sign from lady that the guards have been drugged and he should kill the king
29
An example of soliloquy and the theme of it
-Macbeth has a vision of a bloody dagger that turns to the direction of king Duncan’s bedroom - theme portrayed: violence
30
Scene 2 starts with?
-Macbeth enters with the bloody dagger and feels guilty for killing the king, saying he refuses to plant the evidence on the guards so lady does it - lady claims she would have killed the king herself but he looked like her father as he slept
31
Analyze the guilt Macbeth feels after killing the king
-As he tries to wash the blood off his hand he says : “ even neptunes oceans couldn’t clean my hands” the blood symbolizes guilt which now stains his soul - also has trouble sleeping -theme: guilt and corruption
32
Scene 3: macduff and Lenox arrive at Macbeth’s palace to take the king home. what happens?
-macbeth takes them to king Duncan’s room and acts surprised at the murder -Macbeth claims that out of “rage” of the murder, he kills the “guilty guards” to misguide them. -lady also faints to further dramatize their lies (+ out of fear for their lives Malcom and donalbain run away, making themselves look guilty of their fathers murder.)
33
Scene 4 Ross discusses w/ an old man about the disturbances that are happening after the kings murder, what are the disturbances?
-its night when its supposed to be day -the owls that go after mice went after a falcon (caught and killed) -and that the horses have escaped and went crazy and ate each other
34
Dramatic irony means ?
When an audience knows information that characters in the story dont know
35
Scene 1: begins with Macbeth as the king of Scotland , what else happens?
-Macbeth feels threatened by banquo because of the prophecy -Macbeth invites banquo and his son to a banquet, banquo agrees but says fleance will go out for a ride
36
Example of soliloquy is the second act
“To be king is nothing to be safely king” : it shows how he feels threatened by the banquo prophecy
37
Scene 2and 3: Macbeth persuades assassins to murder banquo and fleance while they are on their ride, how does it go?
-lady still thinks Macbeth is upset about the murder, but doesn’t know macbeths plan to kill and banquo and his son -banquo is killed but fleance escapes, they go to Macbeth and inform him that “we have lost best half of our affair” meaning they did get the job completely done as fleance escaped.
38
Scene 4: at the banquet, Macbeth sees the ghost of banquo, what does it signify?
-it signifies his guilt for basically killing his friend and goes crazy at the banquet -lady covers for him and tells the guests that “hes always been able to see the dead ever since he was a child”
39
How does that author see England for the first time
She was a student when her teacher proudly shows the class a map of England
