Anaphora
Exact repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of lines or sentences. Ex. “We will fight on the beaches. We will fight in the skies…”
Apostrophe
Directly talks about something figuratively. Something that can not speak back.
Assonance
Series of words close together with similar vowel sounds. Ex. Lean, mean, fighting machine.
Atmosphere
How the entire piece of work makes you feel. The elements are often used to create atmosphere and foreshadow events.
Conceit
Similar to a metaphor but in between dissimilar objects that you can only kind of see the connection.
Euphemism
Saying something less offensive or crude then what you mean.
verbal irony
What literally is said is the opposite of what was meant.
Situational irony
Events turn out opposite of what’s expected.
Juxtaposition
Comparing two or more different ideas, characters, objects, etc. Usually to highlight the difference.
Metonym
The name of one thing is replaced with something closely associated with it. Ex. The white house instead of the president.
Metaphor (Extended)
A metaphor developed over a long time, it appears frequently throughout the work.
Motif
A repetition of something throughout a work that helps contribute to a theme.
Parody
A piece of work that imitates the style or content of another with the aim of comic effect or ridicule.

Things in nature that are commonly symbolize other ideas.
