Hyperbaton
• when adjectives and nouns are separated at opposite ends of the line
Ellipsis
Leaving out the verb sum, esse
Polyptoton
• Repetition of a word with many different case endings

• Three phrases or words increasing in length or meaning
Chiasmus
• Word order changed to noun adjective adjective noun
ex.: fors ignara….saeva…ira

Synchysis
• interlocked word order
• often used to emphasize that things are related (as in 457) or it can be used to contrast things
• ex.: itsa….umeros gestaminia nostros (457)

Transferred epithet
- “he gave up the bottle” –> an object or person symbolizing a greater subject or topic
- ex.: verecundo rubore (484)
Ellision
• When two words, one ending and one beginning with a vowel, are combined or can be combined for the purpose of meter
** Elisions can still happen when they are separated by the consonant “M” **
Polysyndeton
• the repetition of a word 3 or more times
Apostrophe
• Breaking the poem by introducing a narration which addresses a character or object in the poem
Syndecdole
- “the mouth representing the face”
- a part representing a whole
- “ora” (mouth) represents the entire FACE, which it is actually translated as
