A literary work where the characters represent bigger ideas (Animal Farm)
Allegory
Stringing together like sounds in a sentence (Black, Bright and Beautiful)
Alliteration
The character in the story who opposes the main character
Antagonist
The repetition of the same vowel sounds in writing
Assonance
The general feeling surrounding a piece of literature
Atmosphere
The use of words with harsh sounds
Cacophony
The people, animals or beings that a story centers around, and the process by which they are created
Characters/Characterization
The height of the story, the answer the the suspense
Climax
A dispute, disagreement or altercation between two or more things
Conflict
The associated meaning with a word, generally doesn’t follow the dictionary meaning
Connotation
The repetition of consonant sounds in a piece of writing
Consonance
The dictionary meaning of a word, the actual meaning
Denotation
The authors word choice and the way he presents himself through his writing
Diction
A sudden realization, generally occurs in an unrelated setting
Epiphany
A writing done about someone to describe them after they have died, read at a funeral.
Eulogy
The use of words that sound nice
Euphony
Language that is understood at a higher level and is not meant exactly as it is said
Figurative Language
A short fiction story generally less than a page long
flash Fiction
When the author goes back in time, generally to discover something they missed or that the reader does not yet know.
Flashback
When the author includes hints that something will happen later in the book
Foreshadowing
The category or type of book, used to divide up the books based on contents
Genre
Exaggeration, almost sarcasm
Hyperbole
When the author uses words the appeal to our senses
Imagery
The actual meaning behind a word
Literal Meaning
A piece of literature that details someone’s life like a story
Memoir
A comparison between two things without using as or like (is, are, was, were)
Metaphor
A piece of literature that is spoken solely by one character, almost like a rant
Monologue
The feelings invoked in you after reading a piece of literature
Mood
The person who tells the story
Narrator
Words that are used to imitate sounds
Onomatopoeia
A phrase that contradicts itself (Pretty ugly)
Oxymoron
