Apostrophe
a punctuation mark used to indicate either possession or the omission of letters e.g. can’t
Ballad
The ballad is a poem that is typically arranged in quatrains with the rhyme scheme ABAB. Ballads are usually narrative, which means they tell a story.
Blank verse
A blank verse is a poem with no rhyme but does have iambic pentameter.
Symbolism
A symbol is literary device that contains several layers of meaning and is representative of several other aspects, concepts or traits than those that are visible in the literal translation alone.
Structure
The length of the lines, rhythms, system of rhymes, repetition, length of the poem, length of stanzas
Rhyme
A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounding words, occurring at the end of lines in poems or songs. A rhyme is a tool utilising repeating patterns that bring rhythm or musicality to poems.
Rythm
Rhythm can be described as the beat and pace of a poem.
Caesura
A stop or pause in a metrical line, often marked by punctuation or by a grammatical boundary, such as a comma or full stop.
End-stopped
A line of poetry that ends with a period or definite punctuation mark, such as a colon.
Enjambment
A phrase or clause, in a line of poetry that does not come to an end at the line break, but moves over to the next line.
Epic
An epic poem is a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet.
Free verse
Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm, and does not rhyme with fixed forms.
Lyric
Lyric poetry is a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person.
Metre
In poetry, metre is the basic rhythmic structure of a verse or lines in verse.
Motif
A motif is a recurring symbol which takes on a figurative meaning.
