Allegory:
A story with two meanings, a clear meaning and a hidden meaning.
Alliteration:
The repetition of consonants at the beginning of successive words within the sentence.
Allusion:
An implied reference of shared knowledge between the reader and author.
Ambiguity:
An aspect of text that lacks a clear, singular meaning.
Analogy:
The comparison of two things for the purpose of an explanation or clarification.
Anecdote:
A personal story.
Anomaly:
Something that strays from what is normal and expected.
Anthropomorphism:
The act of attributing human qualities to a non-human figure.
Archetype:
A recurring idea or object.
Assonance:
Occurs when similar vowel sounds are placed close together.
Bricolage:
Used to describe modern texts that are constructed from pre-existing material.
Cliche:
An over-used, common expression
Contrast:
The deliberate positioning of two or more characters who have different characteristics.
Dialogue:
A conversation between two or more people.
Didactic:
Any text that instructs the reader or gives a moral message.
Deixis:
They require on the context of other words to develop a clear meaning.
Ellipsis - (…) :
Used to truncate quotations that are long.
Emotive language:
Word’s that stir the readers emotions.
Enjambment:
When a sentence runs over more than one line (or stanza).
Euphemism:
Mild expression used to replace a harsh one.
Exclamation - ( ! ) :
Conveys high emotion and enthusiasm.
Figurative language & sound devices:
Included in a: metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration etc.
Foreshadowing:
An allusion to something that will appear later in the narrative.
Flashback:
A scene appearing in the text that has occurred earlier than the main narrative.
Fragmented/truncated sentences:
Incomplete sentences used to increasing tension.
Humour:
Exaggeration, irony and puns used to lighten the tone.
