Discourse
found mostly in the historical books of the OT and the Gospels
and acts of the apostles, where historical events are often described in chronological order.
Historical Narrative
the type found in the Psalms and Job. It may contain a lot of figurative speeches
Poetry
brief stories based though based on real life experience but may not be true, purpose is
to give moral lesson.
Parable
stories that may not be true-to-life or historical but based on legends but
contain message or truth of salvation
Mythical Stories
a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures or the history of a nation.
Epic
a story handed down through generation which is believed to be historical.
Legend
characterized by symbolism and descriptions of visions, as in the book of
Revelation, Daniel and Prophets
Apocalyptic
uses plants and animals as characters of the story
Fables
convey an implied or symbolic meaning rather than a literal meaning
Figures of speech
the type of writing an author uses to express his message.
Literary form
involves a direct or indirect comparison of two unlike things
Metaphors
the writer or speaker exaggerates in order to create a strong effect
Hyperbole
word that actually looks like the sound it makes and which we can hear those
sounds as we read.
Onomatopoeia
involves an explicit comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
