Allegory
story or poem in which characters, settings, and events stand for other people, events, or abstract ideas or qualities. (reveal a hidden meaning)
Allusion
Indirect reference to someone/something. (that is known from history, literature, religion, politics, sports, science, or another branch)
Antagonist
opponent who struggles against or blocks the hero or protagonist in a story
Protagonist
the central character in a story, the one who initiates or drives the action. (hero or anti-hero)
Local Color
term applied to fiction or poetry which tends to place special emphasis on a particular setting (customs, clothing, dialect, and landscape)
Assonance
the repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by diff. consonant sounds especially in words that are together
Anti-hero
central character who lacks all the qualities traditionally associated with heroes.
Analogy
comparison made between 2 things to show how they are alike
Balance
constructing a sentence so that both halves are about the same length/ importance. (can be imbalanced to serve special effect)
Fable
a very short story told in prose or poetry that teaches a practical lesson about how to succeed in life. (Tortoise and Hair).
