Character
a person/ animal who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work
setting
the time and place in which a story happens. Provides a strong sense of setting.
ex. descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons, or weather
Plot
a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.
Conflict
a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main character is on one side of central conflict.
Theme
central idea or belief in a short story
Simile
comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as”
Metaphor
comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is being said to be another; do NOT use “like” or “as”
Personification
figure of speech in which an object/ animal is spoken of as if it has human characteristics
Imagery
the use of language to create vivid pictures in the reader’s mind + appeals to the five senses
Alliteration
the occurrence of the same consonant or sound at the beginning of adjacent words.
