Personification
A figure of speech where human-like characteristics are given to a non-human object
Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes an implicit comparison between two dissimilar things
Foreshadowing
An introduction or “hint” of what is to come later in the story
Imagery
Language that conveys sensory details in a work. It also includes the use of figuritive language to evoke a feeling, to call to mind an idea, or to describe an object
Irony
A contradiction between appearance or expectations and reality
Diction
A writer’s word choice that is purposeful in both vocabulary and syntax. Diction often creates the mood.
Symbol/Symbolism
Something that on the surface is its literal self but which also has another meaning or several different meanings. The object can represent a larger idea.
Simile
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two dissimilar things using “like” or “as”
