Metaphor
Comparing things to other things without using like or as

Alliteration

Personification
Speaking of non-living things as living things
Ex: The icy winds howled in the night.
Imagery
Using words that appeal to any of the five senses: taste touch sight smell hearing
Sentence Length Variation (SLV)
Using short, medium, & long sentences purposely for effect.
Repetition
Purposely saying the same thing or delivering the same message for dramatic effect
Ex: His angry eyes burned like crimson flames. They shone red like the molten rocks of torment.
Dialect
Using the vernacular or style of speech of a certain group of people.
Inversion
Reversing the natural flow of subjects, verbs, & phrasing
Ex: Rick walked into the room. VS Into the room Rick walked.
Hyperbole
Exaggerating deliberately to make a point
Ex: This basement is as cold as the arctic, my fingers are as stiff as stones.
Onomatopoeia
When the pronouncing of a word of word group produces its associated sound.
Ex: Only supper bells, ring ding ding got their attention.
