Aphorism
catch phrase containing general truth in witty manner.

Cliffhanger
story ends unresolved, to return to the story in the next installment
Defamiliarization
Taking something familiar and making it seem utterly unfamiliar and strange
Dramatic
substitution for reality that the audience accepts as real although they know them to be false.
Epiphany
character is suddenly struck with a life-changing realization which changes the rest of the story.
Flashback
take the reader out of the present story and jump into an earlier time period
Flashforward
action jumps ahead to the future of the narrative.
Foreshadowing
give an hint of what is to coming in the story.
Juxtaposition
placing two things side by side so as to highlight their differences.
Paradox
a contradiction that resolves to reveal a deeper meaning behind a contradiction.
Parody
mimics the style of another work, in an exaggerated way, usually for comic effect.
Poetic License
describe intentional departure from traditional structures of language when writing
Stream of consciousness
narrative style that capture a character’s thought in a realistic way.
Symbolism
the idea that things represent other things.
