what is figurative language
language used to create a special effect of feeling, characterised by figures of speech or language that compares exaggerates or has other meanings
what are the most common types of figurative language
simile, metaphor, personificaton, hyperbole
what is a simile
a comparison of two unlike things using the words, like, as, as though
what is a metaphor
an implied compairison of two unlike things without using words, as, like
what is personification
when the author speaks of or describes an animal, object, or idea as if it were a person
what is a hyperbole
deliberate exaggeration used for ephasis or to produce a comic or ironic effect, an overstatement to make a point
what is an allusion
a reference to a mythological, literary, or historical person place or thing
what is an oxymoron
a paradox made up of two seemingly contradictory words
what is imagery
a description of how something looks tastes, smells or sounds
what is onopatepia
the use of a word that resembles a sound
what is a juxtaposition
shows dissimilar events or people side by side so the reader is aware of differences
what is a paradox
a seemingly obsurd or self contradictory statement which is actially true
what is dictition
an authors choice of words based on thier correctness, clearness or affectiveness
what are the types of dictition
low/informal, elevated/formal, abstract/ideas, denotation
what is denotation
the dictionary meaning word of (literary). it is the literal meaning on the word.
