Diction
The choice and use of words and phrases in writing
Voice
Form or format through which narrators tell their stories; Authors’s created by using sentence link word choice, tone, punctuation, and rhythm(distinct qualities that make a writer’s work unique)
Style
Word patterns that create a certain effect on readers; specific styles are required for certain genres( how author writes)
Tone
writer’s attitude towards the audience and subject
Mood
feeling created in a reader by a piece of writing
Imagery
use of vivid, highly descriptive words to appeal to the five senses
Syntax
arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences
nuance
subtle differences in word meaning and usage that result in different shades of meaning
Humor
writing intended to evoke laughter or entertain
Suspense
a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen
Pun
A joke using the different possible meaning of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings
Dramatic Irony
a contradiction between what happens and what is expected;occurs when the audience is aware of something that a character or speaker is not
Verbal Irony
a contradiction between what happens and what is expected;occurs when what is said is the exact opposite of what is meant
Situational Irony
a contradiction between what happens and what is expected;occurs when something happens that directly contradicts the expectations of the characters and the audience
Denotation
the meaning of a word as defined in a dictionary
