Idiom
An expression that cannot be understood by its literal meaning
Hypothetical question
A question not well supported by evidence
Imagery
The pattern of images that are the verbal equivalents of sense experience in a text
Imperative
Noting or pertaining to the mood of a verb used in commands (Go!, Listen!)
Implication
A suggestion an author of speaker makes without stating it directly, author implies’ reader infers
Inductive reasoning
Deriving from general principles from particular facts or instances
Inference
A conclusion one draws based on premise or evidence
Invective
An intensely vehement, highly emotional verbal attack
Irony
The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning, or, incongruity between what is expected and what actually happened
Jargon
The specialized language or vocabulary of a particular group of profession
Legend
A story rooted in fact but which has been elaborated over time so that it is largely fictional
Limerick
Light verse consisting or five lines of regular rhythm
Limited narrator
Third person narration seen through the eyes of a single character

Deviating from normal rules or methods in order to achieve certain effects
