Gram + coccobacillus found in pairs
weakly beta hemolytic
motile
Able to grow in the refrigerator

A
soil GIT of various animals, birds, invertebrates
5-10% of humans have it in their gut with no symptoms

Transmission
A
Food borne.
Raw milk, unpasteurized cheeses, raw fruits and veggies, cold cuts etc
Mother to child (Congenital and during labor)

Disease
A
Diarrhea or flu like illnesses in healthy people
Immunocompromised- Bacteremia, meningitis
Neonates infected in utero or during birth: Still birth, septicemia, meningitis

Virulence Factor
A
Can grow at refrigerated temps
Grows within cells when in the body thereby protected from antibodies
