What is awareness
Noting the presence of a particular sound or sound.
Awareness subskills:
● Listening attention
● Responding to environmental sounds (noise makers, recorded sound)
● Responding to speech sounds (live sound)
● Alerting to continuous sound and noting when it stops

Indicators for awareness
Widening eyes
Head turning
Glancing eyes
Pointing to ear
Making judgements as to the similarity or between sounds
Discrimination
Discrimination indicators:
Changes in facial expressions, action or demeanor to indicate that something different was heard
Discrimination Subskills:
● Responding differentiality to:
○ Music vs speech
○ Toys vs speech
● Responding differentiality to:
○ Female and male voice
○ Angry, sad, or happy voice
● remediation/clarification tasks
○ Re: 2 phonemes
○ Re: 2 words/utterance
What is patterning?
Recognizing the features of rate, duration, intensity, and pitch that create rhythms in speech sounds and speech.
Indicators of patterning
● Changes in facial expression, action or demeanor when a specific change in duration, intensity or pitch of a sound occurs
● Vocalizing with beats that match an envi sound or other vocalization. (a child first identifies the syllables, ginagawa ang pattern pero hindi pa ginagawa ang words.)
● A physical action to the suprasegmentals of a sound
Sub-skills of patterning:
● Marking syllable number in word imitations
● Noting differences b/w short and long vocalizations utterances
● Noting differences between fast and slow speech
● Noting changes in pitch
What is identification
Can identify a word, an element
Indicators for identification
● Label a sound, word or other input through a motor or speech response
● Repeating, imitating
● Pointing
● Writing

● Imitating speech sounds

● Identifying words varying by syllable number
● Identifying words
● Identifying a phrase based on inclusion of ELTLS
● Identifying simple sentences containing key words with varying vowel content and syllable number

What is comprehension
Creating novel response? Demonstrating understanding of particular input
Indicators of comprehension
Generation of new ideas
○ One that is qualitatively different than the stimuli presented
● Answering a question
● Continuing a thought
Subskills of comprehension
● Developing memory and concept for a single word
● Showing understanding of ELTLS
● Responding appropriately to common expressions
● Following simple directions
● Answering common questions
