The physical process of receiving sound. It is a filtering process that begins when sound is relayed to your brain

-do not need to interact

-fully participating as you process what a person says

-when specific information or instructions are needed

-when the listener puts themselves in the speaker’s place
Empathetic Listening

-when the listener demonstrates an understanding of the message by restating what was said
Reflective Listening

-determining the quality or validity of what is being said
Deliberative Listening
-short bursts of listening
-usually wants to listen but mind wanders
Impatient Listening
-Decide what information you hope to gain
-Listen carefully if someone is responding to your request or question
-People may be evasive, or avoid giving a direct answer
Listen for Specific Information
-Find out about what will be heard
-Anticipate future needs
-Summarize all of the information
-Give feedback
Listen to Instructions
-Decide whether you can or should do what is asked
-Question and evaluate requests:
-Determine whether the request is an assigned job task
-Be sure you understand the request
-Ask follow-up questions
-Make comments to summarize
-Do not rely on memory

-Determine the speaker’s purpose:
-What is in it for the person speaking?
-Whom does he or she represent?
-What does he or she want me to do or believe?
-What are the pros and cons of this issue?
