List The Basic Functions Of The Nervous System Flashcards
What provides the nervous systems sensory functions?
Sensory receptors located at the end of the peripheral nervous system.
What is the purpose of the sensory receptors?
They detect changes in the body’s internal and external environments relaying this information.
What might the sensory receptors inform the body of?
They they inform the nervous system of oxygen levels, temperature, light or sound.
What happens to the information received by sensory receptors?
This information is converted in to nerve impulses which are integrated so that they are processed to achieve correct reaction. Motor functions then act on the integrated information.
What is the name given to the structures that respond to the information?
These are called effectors and are located outside the nervous system.
What occurs when an effector is stimulated?
When an effector is stimulated by a nerve impulse they carry out their particular function.
Describe what an effector may be?
They may be muscles or glands and they may secrete or contract.
What does the somatic nervous system handle?
The somatic nervous system controls consciously controlled motor functions such as skeletal muscles.
What might an involuntary effector be?
This may be the heart, blood vessels or various glands.
What are involuntary effectors controlled by?
This is controlled by the peripheral nervous system.
