Lisa Nordin: Effectiveness Monitoring Forest Practices in BC Flashcards
What is the ministry that forest work is primarily undertaken within?
The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development
Know your acronyms with respect to British Columbia governmental forestry management as provided in Lisa’s presentation
- FREP - Forest and Range Evaluation Program
- FRPA - Forest and Range Practices Act
*
What are the 2 major catagories of riperian classifications under the FREP mandate?
- Streams (riparian classes S1-S6 based on stream/channel width, fish bearing, or part of a watershed)
- Wetlands (riparian classes W1-W5 based on wetland present, size, and BEC zone)
Name the 11 major resource acatgories that FREP has developed monitoring protocals for evaluation
- Biodiversity
- Cultural heritage
- Fish/Riperian fish/watershed
- Asscociated forgae and plant communities
- Recreation
- Resource features
- Soils
- Timber
- Visual quality
- Water quility
- Wildlife
What does the water quility protocal evaluate? How long does it take to complete? What are some of the things being measured? How is the data used?
- It evaluates potential fine sediment transfer to a stream
- The site assessment about 30 minutes to complete
- Some of the thingng being measured include the surface area of exposed ground draining towards a stream, and stream channel characteristics
- The data can be used to figure out the toal volume of fine sediment generated at the site and the associated general level of managment of the site.
- This data can then be used to calculate the turbidity and understand how fish at the site will be impacted
What are some of things measures for the riparian/stream protocal?
LIst 7
- channel bed distrubance
- channel bank disturbance
- channel morphology
- fish cover diversity
- moss abundance and condition
- fine sediments
- aquatic invertebrate diversity
What are the 6 criteria for the functioning condition of riperian/streams?
- withstand norml peak flood events without experiencing accelerated soil loss, channel movement, or bank movement
- filter run off
- store and safely release water
- maintian the conectivity of fish habitats in streams and riperian areas
- maintian an adequate riparian root network or LWD supply
- provide shade and reduce bank microclimate
List the 5 key indicators that are part of the fish passgae assessment for culverts
- Embeddedness
- Outlet drop
- Stream width ratio
- Culvert slope
- Culvert lenght
