11
Q

What is a saturated fatty acid?

A

Doesn’t have any double bonds between the carbon atoms. It is saturated with hydrogen.

12
Q

What is an unsaturated fatty acid?

A

Has double bonds between the carbon atoms, which causes the chain to kink.

16
Q

What are phospholipids made up of?

A

A glycerol molecule with a phosphate group and two fatty acids attached to it.

17
Q

What is the phosphate group in phospholipids?

A

Hydrophilic.

18
Q

Define hydrophilic.

A

Attracts water molecules.

19
Q

What are the fatty acids in phospholipids?

A

Hydrophobic.

20
Q

What are triglycerides mainly used as?

A

Storage molecules.

21
Q

Why are triglycerides good storage molecules?

A

The long hydrocarbon tails of the fatty acids contain lots of chemical energy - a load of energy is released when they’re broken down.

22
Q

What do triglycerides bundle together as?

A

Insoluble droplets in cells because the fatty acid tails are hydrophobic - the tails face inwards, shielding themselves from water with their glycerol heads.

23
Q

What do phospholipids make up?

A

The bilayer of cell membranes.

24
Q

What do cell membranes do?

A

Control what enters and leaves a cell.

25
Why to phospholipids form a double layer?
Phospholipid heads are hydrophilic and their tails are hydrophobic, so they form a double layer with their heads facing out towards the water on either side.
26
How does the membrane act as a barrier to water-soluble substances?
The centre of the bilayer is hydrophobic, so water-soluble substances can't easily pass through it.
27
What is the test for lipids?
The Emulsion Test.
28
How do you carry out the emulsion test?
Shake the test substance with ethanol for about a minute, then pour the solution into water. Any lipid will show up as a milky emulsion.
