Lipids Flashcards
Triglycerides
50-150 mg/dl
Form of fat and major energy for body. Assess risk for developing heart disease.
Total cholesterol
Less than 200 mg/dL
Measure of total blood cholesterol components LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein), and VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein), which is the triglyceride-carrying component of lipids).
High-density lipoprotein (HDL):
40-80 mg/dl
Sometimes called “good” cholesterol. Carries cholesterol from other parts of body back to liver which then removes it from the body.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL):
85-125 mg/dl
Sometimes called “bad” cholesterol, high levels lead to plaque buildup in the arteries.
VLDL = very low-density lipoprotein. Also sometimes called “bad” cholesterol which contributes to plaque buildup. LDL and VLDL are different in that VLDL mainly carries triglycerides (certain type of lipid) and LDL mainly carries cholesterol (another type of lipid). Triglycerides store unused calories and provide body with energy. Cholesterol is used to build cells and certain hormones.
