Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the structure of a triglyceride
A
- glyceol molecule
- 3 fatty acid tails
- 3 ester bonds
2
Q
What state do saturated vs unsaturated triglycerides tend to be?
A
- sat: solid
- unsat: liquid
3
Q
Why are PLs described as surfactants?
A
- surface active agents.
- Form a layer on surface of water with phosphate heads in water and tails ticking out.
4
Q
What are sterols
A
- Steroid alcohols
- Have dual hydrophobic/philic characteristics.
- The OH group is polar therefore hydrophilic. Rest is phobic
5
Q
What is the role of cholesterol in cell membranes?
A
- Adds stability to cell membranes by keeping them fluid at low temps and preventing them becoming too fluid at high temps
6
Q
What molecules are manufactured from cholesterol?
A
- vitamin D
- Steroid hormones
- Bile
7
Q
What are the roles of lipids?
A
- membrane formation
- hydrophobic barriers
- hormone production
- electrical insulation
- waterproofing
- energy storage
- thermal insulation
- cushioning
- buoyancy
