Lipids Flashcards
Are lipids soluble or insoluble in water?
Insoluble
Do lipids provide more or less energy than carbohydrates?
Twice as much energy!
Lipids provide 3 important things to cell membranes. What are they?
- Protection
- Insulation
- Hormones
What are the 4 groups of lipids? (Hint: TPSW)
- Triglycerides
- Phospholipids
- Sterols
- Waxes
Triglycerides contain 2 things. What are they?
Fats
Oils
Triglycerides are composed of how many glycerol and how many fatty acids? (Hint - TRI)
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids
How many glycerol and fatty acids are phospholipids composed of?
1 glycerol
2 fatty acids
Sterols are a type of lipid. They contain LDL and HDL cholesterol. Which one is good, which is bad and why?
LDL - bad. Carries cholesterol from liver to the body (arteries block)
HDL - good. Carries cholesterol away from arteries to the liver for storage.
Cholesterol is a type of Sterol. What’s it used to make?
Testosterone
Estrogen
Vitamin D
Bile
Waxes are a type of lipid. Give example in nature or in body.
