Q

How are triglycerides formed?

A

Triglycerides are formed by the condensation between each of the 3 OH groups on the glycerol and the OH group of each fatty acid chain

9
Q

Structure & properties of triglycerides.

A

many carbon-hydrogen bonds with little oxygen - stores energy & can release a lot of energy when broken down
metabolic water source - can release water when oxidised
relatively low in mass - a lot can be stored in animals without increasing mass & preventing movement
part of adipose tissue - provides insulation and protects organs

11
Q

Structure & properties of phospholipids.

A

hydrophilic head - attracts water
hydrophobic tails - repels water
forms bilayers - forms double layers with heads facing outwards and tails inwards; creates a membrane

If a fatty acid tail is saturated, what does this mean for the membrane?

A

It will be less fluid

18

If a fatty acid tail is unsaturated, what does this mean for the membrane?

A

It will be more fluid
