Inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
What is an inorganic ion?
A
An ion that does not contain carbon (with some exceptions)
2
Q
Where do inorganic ions occur?
A
They occur in solution in the cytoplasm & body fluids of organisms
- some low in conc, some high in conc
3
Q
What are the 4 inorganic ions?
A
- Hydrogen ions H+
- Iron ions Fe2+
- Sodium ions Na+
- Phosphate ions PO43-
4
Q
What are some roles of hydrogen ions?
A
- can lower the pH of solutions
- impact enzyme function & haemoglobin function
- involved in chemiosmosis
- used in photosynthesis reactions
5
Q
What are some roles of iron ions?
A
- component of haemoglobin: binds to oxygen
6
Q
What are some roles of sodium ions?
A
- co-transport of glucose and amino acids
- muscle contraction
- generating nerve impulses
7
Q
What are some roles of phosphate ions?
A
- a component of nucleotides, ATP, ADP and phospholipids
- bonds stores energy in ATP
- phosphorylates other molecules to make them more reactive
