Lipids Flashcards
what are the two groups of lipids
- Triglyceride
- phospholipids
what does a triglyceride consist of (what is its structure)
- 3 fatty acids (RCOOH)
- Glycerol
what reaction is a triglyceride formed from
condensation reaction
what bond is formed during the condensation reaction of a glycerol and a fatty acid
ester bond
how is an ester bond formed
by a condensation reaction between the glycerol and fatty acid
what can the R group in a fatty acid be ( x or y answer)
- SATURATED
OR - UNSATURATED
what does a phospholipid consist of (what is its structure)
- 2 fatty acids
- glycerol
- phosphate group
what is ONE difference that phospholipid has in comparison to the triglyceride.
phospholipid has a phosphate group
triglyceride does not.
what is the properties in relation to its structure in a triglyceride
- it hs a hight ration of c-h bonded to carbons meaning MORE ENERGY IS RELEASED THAN THE SAME MASS OF CARBOHYDRATES.
- it is insoluble in water so it does not affect water potential
what is the properties in relation to its structure in phospholipids
- it forms a bilayer which is used for the DIFFUSION of small/non polar molecules
- hydrophobic head- the phosphate attracts water NON POLAR
- hydrophobic tail- repels polar molecules.
what is a saturated fatty acid
when there is no double bonds bonded to the c-h bond
what is an unsaturated fatty acid?
when there is one or more double bonds in a C-H bonds
how do you test for lipids
emulsion test
in points state the method for the test for lipids
add ethanol to the test tube and shake
then add water
what result will you see if lipid is present
white/ cloudy emulsion
