Linking diseases with the organisms that cause them Flashcards
What is invasive meningococcal disease?
Clinical evidence of invasive disease
+Lab confirmation of infection:
- Isolation of N.men from a normally sterile site (blood, CSF, synovial, pleural or pericardial fluid) OR
- N.men nucleic acid from a normally sterile site.
Probable Case
Clinical evidence of invasive disease with purpura fulminans or petechiae and no other apparent cause
+Non-confirmatory lab evidence:
- N.men antigen in the CSF OR
- N.men not isolated from a normally sterile site OR
- N.men nucleic acid not detected from a normally sterile site.
What is invasive pneumococcal disease?
Clinical evidence of invasive disease{}
+Lab confirmation of infection:
- Isolation of S.pneumo from a normally sterile site (not including the middle ear) OR
- S.pneumo DNA from a normally sterile site (excluding the middle ear).
