Linkages + Epsistais Flashcards
What is sex linkage?
-phenotypic expression of an allele that is dependent on the gender of the individual
-located on sex chromosome
What is autosomal linkage?
-2 genes located on the same chromosome
What is epistasis?
-gene at 1 locus alters the phenotypic expression of a gene at 2 locus
-can mask or suppress expression of another locus
What is recessive epistasis?
-presence of a recessive allele prevents the expression of another allele at 2 locus
-9:3:4 ratio
What is dominant epistasis?
-dominate allele of 1 genes masks the effects of either allele of 2 gene
-gives 12:3:1 ratio
What are the differences + similarities between epistasis and linked genes?
-both lead to unexpected phenotypical ratios
-linked are inherited together
-epistasis can result in 1 gene effectively silencing another
How are sex chromosomes different from autosomes?
Non-homologous
