Isolating Mechanisms Flashcards
What is speciation?
-the formation of new species by the process of evolution
What is allopatric speciation?
-part of a population become geographically isolated
What are the effects of allopatric speciation?
-don’ t interbreed with main group
-alleles in group still undergo mutations
-different characteristics are selected
-after generations the 2 groups are so different = can’t interbreed
What are reproductive barriers?
-prevent successful interbreeding
What are the 2 types of barriers?
- Prezygotic
- Postzygotic
What is prezygotic?
-preventing fertilisation
What is postzygotic?
-preventing offspring serving to term
What is polymorphic population?
-showing more than one distinct phenotype
What is artificial selection?
-selection pressure is humans choosing desirable features
What is interbreeding?
-breeding closely related individuals
What is a seed bank?
-systematic storage of samples of seeds
What is outbreeding?
-introducing alleles from a gene bank to a population with low genetic diversity
