Linkages and Mechanisms Flashcards
What is a mechanism?
An arrangement of elements into a system to transmit motion in a predetermined fashion.
What is kinematics?
The study of motion without regard to forces.
What are degrees of Freedom?
The number of independent parameters that define an objects position in space.
What is a joint?
A connection between two or more parts of a mechanism.
How do we classify joints?
The type of contact
The number of degrees of freedom
the number of components connected by the joint
What is a link?
It is a component of a mechanism. It can be classified by the number of components that it has with other components.
What is a chain?
An assemblage of links and joints to provide a controlled output motion in response to a supplied input motion.
What is Grueblers condition?
It allows us to predict the degrees of freedom for a mechanism.
DOF = (3 x number of links) - (2 x number of joints)
number of links does not include grounded links.
The number of joints reflects the value of each joint.
What is the value of a 1 DOF joint??
1
What is the value of a 2 DOF joint?
0.5
