Design Process Flashcards
What is the general flow chart for the design process?
Specification — Conceptual Design — Detailed Design — Manufacture. At each iteration there is a feedback loop as the product is a constant revision of itself.
What is the specification stage?
Familiarising yourself with the problem. Creating a detailed definition of the problem on paper.
Don’t make any decisions about the solution or get caught up on having only one solution.
Formulating the important issues from the specification that will need to be addressed.
What is the conceptual design stage?
Generating ideas and concepts.
Developing these concepts and evaluating them by deciding on the best.
Checking the concepts against the specification.
Using selection procedures such as a MART analysis….
Provide simple evidence that the concept may work.
What is the detailed design stage?
Developing all details of the chosen design. Using engineering science to prove that the design will meet the specifications.
Why do we need to provide documentation at each step of the design stage?
Because each stage may be done by different people so need to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
What are the key points about the design stage?
There are no wrong answers. In saying this, you still have to prove that your design will work. Need to be able to communicate your design to people through drawings and a report.
What is the point of deconstructing the problem?
Allows us to break it down into tiny components for each task that needs to be performed and then to generate sub solutions for each small task.
What is the Pugh design process?
Sometimes when analysing concepts we don’t have enough information to numerically rank concepts. Therefore we can decide on a baseline concept, and then every other concept, or sub-solution, can rank as better or worse than the baseline. Once we have done the above, then calculate the total score for a concept. Try to improve each of the concepts sub systems by looking at what other concepts got good scores.
