LING321: Exam 1 Flashcards
Three goals of phonology
1- descriptive adequacy
2- theoretical elegance
3- cognitive plausibility
Autosegmental phonology: the feature tree
Segments are made up by a mother node ‘root’ (composed of [cons] and [son] specifications), which groups together a feature tree of laryngeal, place and manner features
Assumption of autosegmental phonology
Processes are only expressed as SPREADING of a leaf or branch of the feature tree
Or
DELINKING = chopping off some node of the tree
The three processes of SPREADING
1- assimilation
2- vowel harmony
3- CV assimilation
Three types of DELINKING
1- dissimulation
2- neutralizations
3- debuccalization
Debuccalization
Delinking of the place mode
Complex place segments
A segment that has more than one articulator under the Place node
‘Double articulation’ in languages like Ewe ex: [gb], [kp]
Manner-contour segments
A segment that has a sequence of two differently valued manner features
Ex: -cont and +cont for affricates
Secondary articulations
A consonant that has two Place specifications, one for the place of the manner of articulation and another for a simultaneous vowel articulation
