Lineside Signs Flashcards
Describe 3 types of Limit of Shunt sign
Limit of Shunt position light with two permanent horizontal red lights, a white sign with red writing saying ‘SHUNT LIMIT’ and a white sign with red writing saying ‘LIMIT OF SHUNT’.
Where a limit of shunt sign is present, what does this mean?
No part of the train may pass this sign, signal or indicator unless authorised by the signaller.
If you do pass a limit of shunt sign without permission, what would this be considered to be?
A SPAD
Where would limit of shunt signs be located?
When moving in the non-normal direction on a running line. When travelling in the normal direction, you will see the back of these signs.
When a limit of shunt is displayed as a signal on a position light as two red horizontal lights, will these ever clear?
No.
Describe a stop board
These contain the word ‘STOP’, a red circle and instructions for the driver to follow.
What should a driver do when arriving at a stop board?
Stop their train immediately short of the sign, apply brake step 3 and apply the DRA. Then carry out the instructions listed.
When may a driver pass the stop board?
When the instructions have been carried out or when permission has been given by the signaller to pass.
What are points indicators and where can these be found?
These are found on low speed lines or in depots and are used to show the position and security of points.
Describe what a points indicator looks like
It will contain a single light above a sign that says ‘points indicator’
What does a red steady or flashing light mean on a points indicator?
Stop at the points indicator and contact the signaller unless otherwise authorised. If passed without authority, this is a SPAD.
What does no light mean on a points indicator?
Stop at the points indicator and contact the signaller unless otherwise authorised. If passed without authority, this is a SPAD.
What does a steady yellow light mean on a points indicator?
The points to which the sign applies are fitting correctly. You may proceed.
What does a flashing yellow light mean on a points indicator?
The points are not set and you must stop and contact the signaller before proceeding.
What are banner repeating signals and where might these be found?
Where signals are difficult to see, banner repeaters may be provided to give advance notice of the upcoming signal aspect.
Where banner repeaters are in relation to a stop signal, what will they contain?
A solid black line in the circle in either the horizontal or 45 degrees position
Where banner repeaters are in relation to a distant signal, what will they contain?
A solid black line with a fishtail in the circle in either the horizontal or 45 degrees position.
What is meant by a banner repeater containing a horizontal solid black line?
The next signal is at danger
What is meant by a banner repeater containing a solid black line at 45 degrees?
The next signal is displaying a proceed aspect (either single yellow, double yellow or green).
What is meant by a banner repeater containing a solid black line at 45 degrees with a green circle around it?
The next signal is displaying a green proceed aspect.
What is meant by a banner repeater containing a black horizontal fishtail?
The distant signal ahead is at caution
What is meant by a banner repeater containing a black fishtail at 45 degrees?
The distant signal ahead is at proceed
If you receive two banner repeaters on the same post, what does this mean?
These are banner repeaters for the straight route and for the diverging route.
If two banner repeaters are on the same post with a horizontal solid line on the left and a solid line at 45 degrees is on the right, what does this tell you?
The signal ahead on the route to the left is at danger and the signal ahead on the route to the right is displaying a proceed aspect.
What will be contained on the signal ID plates for banner repeating signals?
‘BR’
What is a 3 state banner repeater?
A banner repeater that can display either horizontal, 45 degrees or a green 45 degrees signal
What will be contained on the signal ID plates for a 3 state banner repeater?
A white circle with a black vertical line through it.
What is a co-acting signal?
Where signals are difficult to see, co-acting signals can give both long and short distance sighting of the signal. This repeats the exact same aspect and signal type or indication as the main aspect where the main aspect is difficult to see.
Whilst a co-acting signal shows the exact signal type and aspect as the main aspect, what should you bear in mind if the main aspect is located on a gantry and the co-acting signal is at floor level?
The signal at floor level will be displaying the same aspect but the usual order of the colour aspects will be reversed so that the most restrictive signal is at the driver’s eye level. (On a gantry, red would usually be at the bottom but on the floor, red would be at the top).
What are countdown marker boards?
Inform the driver of the distance between the sign and the signal concerned and may be located in close proximity to a banner repeater.
