Q

What is a co-acting signal?

A

Where signals are difficult to see, co-acting signals can give both long and short distance sighting of the signal. This repeats the exact same aspect and signal type or indication as the main aspect where the main aspect is difficult to see.

29
Q

Whilst a co-acting signal shows the exact signal type and aspect as the main aspect, what should you bear in mind if the main aspect is located on a gantry and the co-acting signal is at floor level?

A

The signal at floor level will be displaying the same aspect but the usual order of the colour aspects will be reversed so that the most restrictive signal is at the driver’s eye level. (On a gantry, red would usually be at the bottom but on the floor, red would be at the top).

31
Q

How would you know what signal the countdown marker boards are in relation to?

A

The countdown marker boards contain the signal number that they are in relation to.

32
Q

What is the distance between a marker board containing 3 marks and the signal itself?

A

300m

33
Q

What is the distance between a marker board containing 2 marks and the signal itself?

A

200m

34
Q

What is the distance between a marker board containing 1 mark and the signal itself?

A

100m

35
Q

What is a SPAD indicator?

A

Used to inform drivers if a train has passed a signal at danger within that area.

36
Q

Describe what a SPAD indicator looks like

A

A three aspect signal head which is fitted with a blue backplate. The centre red aspect will also contain the word ‘STOP’

37
Q

Where would a SPAD indicator normally be positioned?

A

50 metres beyond a stop signal.

38
Q

What is the normal aspect shown by the SPAD indicator?

A

Unlit

39
Q

If a signal is passed at danger, what aspect will be shown by the SPAD indicator?

A

The SPAD indicator will be activated and show a red flashing light in the top and bottom aspect and a steady red light with the word STOP in the centre.

40
Q

What are your actions if the indicator is activated?

A

Immediately stop your train, even if the signal was cleared when you passed it. You must not continue until you have been authorised to do so as the SPAD may have occurred on another line and that movement may conflict with your train.

41
Q

What are OFF indicators?

A

Provided on platforms to assist with the dispatch procedure. Where the word OFF is shown inside the theatre box, this indicates that the signal has cleared to a proceed aspect.

42
Q

What do OFF indicators not tell you?

A

The proceed aspect that is showing or the route to be taken

43
Q

Would the driver ever use an OFF indicator?

A

Yes, if the signal could not be seen from the starting position.

44
Q

What will the OFF indicator show when the signal is at danger?

A

The theatre box will be unlit.

45
Q

On a bi-directional line, what may also be contained within an OFF indicator?

A

UP/DN to show the route has been set.

46
Q

What is a Close Doors indicator?

A

Display the letters ‘CD’ when illuminated to let the driver know that it is safe to close the doors on the train where this is the driver’s responsibility.

47
Q

What is a Right Away indicator and what do these look like?

A

These indicators display the letters ‘R’ or ‘RA’. If these are illuminated, it tells the driver that the station duties are complete, the train is secure and it is safe to proceed.

48
Q

How would you identify a permissible speed indicator?

A

These are old style with a yellow number on a black post, white backed circle with red ring and speed in centre for mph or black backed circle with red ring and speed in centre in km/h. In limited clearance areas, these may be oval shaped.

49
Q

What does a permissible speed indicator inform the driver of?

A

The start of the permissible speed.

50
Q

What may a permissible speed indicator contain if there is a diverging junction?

A

An arrow indicating where the start of the permissible speed applies and whether this is to the left or the right of the straight route at a diverging junction.

51
Q

What may a permissible speed indicator contain if there are diverging junctions to the left and the right and the permissible speed is the same?

A

Two arrows pointing in both directions.

52
Q

What is a warning indicator and what does this look like?

A

Provided on the approach to a reduction in permissible speed ahead. These are triangular and either white or black with yellow outline and contain the upcoming speed in the centre.

If white backed= mph
If black backed= km/h

53
Q

What may also be present ahead of a warning indicator?

A

An AWS magnet on the approach that will sound a warning horn.

54
Q

What are differential permissible speed indicators and what do these look like?

A

These display two speed figures. The bottom speed is always higher and always applies to PPPL trains (Postage, Parcel, Passenger and Light Locomotive either loaded or unloaded). The top figure applies to all other trains.

These can either be old style with yellow numbers on a black post, circular white backed with red ring, circular black backed with red ring or can appear as a warning indicator that is either black or white backed with a yellow outline.

55
Q

Where a permissible speed indicator contains letters, what does this tell you?

A

That the permissible speed only applies to the trains denoted by the letters.

56
Q

What does HST stand for?

A

High Speed Trains

57
Q

What does MU stand for?

A

Multiple Unit trains

58
Q

What does DMU stand for?

A

Diesel multiple unit trains

59
Q

What does EMU stand for?

A

Electric multiple unit trains

60
Q

What does SP stand for?

A

Sprinter multiple unit trains

61
Q

What is an emergency indicator?

A

This is a standing sign that contains black and yellow chevrons and two flashing white lights that will be working at all times. It is used when an emergency speed restriction is in place.

62
Q

What would you expect to be placed before an emergency indicator?

A

An AWS magnet

63
Q

Would you receive an AWS warning for an emergency indicator in an AWS gap area?

A

No.

64
Q

What is a whistle board?

A

May be provided on the approach to level crossings and can be a circular sign containing a ‘W’ or an old style yellow ‘W’ on a black post.

65
Q

When should a whistle board be obeyed?

A

Only outside the hours of 23:59 and 05:59. In an emergency, you may still use your horn in these areas outside of these hours.

66
Q

What are gradient signs?

A

Situated on the lineside and are used to identify the change in gradient at that particular location.

67
Q

How are gradients expressed on a gradient sign?

A

As a ratio. If the sign says 460, this means that the track rises or falls one in every 460 metres. This means that every 460 metres, you will rise or fall 1 metre depending on the angle of the gradient sign that indicates the direction of the slope.

68
Q

What are car stop markers?

A

These inform the driver of the correct stopping point for the train depending on the number of carriages. These signs will usually contain a number to correspond with the number of carriages. Eg: ‘4 Car Stop’ is where a train with 4 carriages should stop.

69
Q

What are mile posts?

A

These are signs situated on the lineside and used to identify locations. The number denotes the mileage to or from the principal city and there will be dots or marks to denote each quarter of a mile.

70
Q

What is a possession limit board and what do these look like?

A

These identify the boundary of a possession. They may also be used as part of the protection for a line blockage.

The board is a red, double sided octagonal board that says STOP and can be seen in both directions. It will also contain a steady or flashing red light that is visible in both directions.

71
Q

If a possession limit board is passed without authority, what is this considered to be?

A

A SPAD.

72
Q

What are work site marker boards and what do these look like?

A

May be provided within a possession of a running line.

The board is yellow, double sided and is visible in both directions. It has two red flashing lights to indicate the entrance and two yellow lights to indicate the exit.

73
Q

Who must give you permission to pass a work site marker board at the entrance?

A

The Engineering Supervisor

74
Q

Who must give you permission to pass a work site marker board at the exit?

A

The Person in Charge of Possession (PICOP)

75
Q

If you were to pass either the entrance or the exit work site marker boards without authority, what would this be considered to be?

A

A SPAD.
